Title: Natural Resources Innovation Internship

Timeline: May – August 2026

Position Type: Paid, Full Time

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

The Natural Resources Innovation Internship Project (NRII) connects postsecondary students with real world challenges in Nova Scotia’s natural resources sector through paid, fulltime innovation internships hosted by university and college-based innovation Sandboxes.

Interns from across disciplines and levels of study will work in small teams and be supported by Sandbox staff, sector partners, and subject matter experts to explore emerging problems and opportunities in areas such as geoscience, sustainability, data and GIS, engineering, strategy, public awareness, and sector innovation.

This project is supported by the Province of Nova Scotia in partnership with post-secondary institutions and sector organizations. Students will have the opportunity to present their work to government and sector stakeholders at the end of their internship.

What interns will do

  • Work on pre-defined problems and opportunities connected to Nova Scotia’s natural resources sector
  • Apply innovation methods like system mapping and rapid prototyping
  • Network with students and subject matter experts from a range of disciplines and institutions
  • Produce tangible outputs like prototypes, analyses, tools, or insight briefs by the end of the internship

What interns receive

  • Paid, fulltime employment for the internship term ($23.80/hour, 35 hours/week)
  • Hands-on experience with real sector challenges and partners
  • Mentorship from Sandbox staff and access to sector experts
  • Opportunities to build innovation, collaboration, and applied problem solving skills

Who should apply

  • College, undergraduate and graduate students who are continuing their studies in Fall 2026 across post-secondary institutions
  • Open to a wide range of disciplines including engineering, geology, environmental studies, computer science, political science, business, design, and more
  • Students interested in innovation, applied problem solving, and the future of Nova Scotia’s natural resources sector
  • No prior sector experience is required; curiosity and willingness to learn are valued

Applications to the intern pool are open to all backgrounds and disciplines. Project topics will vary based on sector partner submissions, and final selection will rely on the pool of intern applications and available projects.
